How to protect your PDF notes from being shared on Telegram

By Learning Media Publication · Updated 22 October 2026

If you sell notes, test series or e-books as PDFs, you have probably found them on a Telegram channel within days. No method can make a PDF impossible to copy, because anyone who can read a page can photograph it. What you can do is make sharing risky for the buyer and make leaks easy to trace. That stops most piracy.

Why ordinary passwords don't work

If every buyer gets the same file with the same password, the password simply gets shared with the file. Once a copy leaks, you have no idea who leaked it.

What works: a personal copy for each buyer

Give every buyer their own copy with their name and phone number printed on every page. People think twice before posting a file that identifies them in a public group. And if a copy does leak, the name on the page tells you exactly whose copy it was.

How to do it

  1. Prepare a buyer list in Excel or Google Sheets with columns for name, phone and email.
  2. Open Protect Notes, select your PDF and import the buyer list.
  3. Choose a tiled or centre watermark and keep the footer notice ("Licensed to … Sharing this copy is illegal").
  4. Download the ZIP: it contains one named PDF per buyer and a copy log you should keep safe.
  5. Send each buyer only their own file.

Make the watermark hard to remove

  • Flatten pages (Premium) turns each page into an image with the watermark burnt in, so it can't be deleted with a PDF editor and text can't be copied.
  • A password per buyer (their own phone number) means a buyer who shares the file must share their number too.
  • Blocking printing and copying stops casual copying in most PDF readers.

When you find a leaked copy

Download the leaked file and open the Find who leaked it tab in Protect Notes. It reads the hidden copy ID and buyer details stored in the PDF. Even if those were stripped, the name and copy ID printed on the pages remain. You can then contact the buyer, cancel their access to future material, and report the channel to Telegram as copyright infringement.

Other good habits

  • Put your institute name and website on every page so pirated copies still advertise you.
  • Release material in parts (weekly or chapter-wise) instead of everything at once.
  • Mention in your terms of sale that copies are personal and traceable. Simply knowing this deters most buyers.
