Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

HEIC files are about half the size of JPG at the same quality. To make your iPhone save JPG instead, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. The first time you convert, the browser downloads a free decoder, and your photos stay on your device.

Is the quality reduced?

At the default quality of 92% the difference is not visible. Move the slider to 100% for the highest quality and larger files.
