Citation generator

Create correctly formatted references from a DOI, ISBN or title, or by typing the details.

For example 10.1038/nature12373, 9780143127796, or the title of a paper.

Your references

References you add appear here. They're saved in this browser, so they'll still be here when you come back.

Your reference list is saved in this browser only. Lookups send just the DOI, ISBN or title to public academic databases.

How to use the citation generator

    1. Choose your citation style, such as APA 7th edition or MLA 9th edition.
    2. Paste a DOI, ISBN or title and select Find, or switch to Enter manually for anything else.
    3. Copy each reference, or copy the whole list. You can also download it for Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote or LaTeX.

    About this tool

References are built from the official records in Crossref, OpenLibrary and Google Books, so author names, volume, issue and page numbers come from the publisher's own data. That makes them far more reliable than references typed from memory or suggested by AI chatbots, which often invent details.

Your list stays in this browser between visits. Switch the style at any time and every reference is reformatted at once, along with its in-text citation. Download the list as BibTeX or RIS to use it in a reference manager.

    Questions

    Which citation styles are supported?

APA 7th edition, MLA 9th edition, Chicago author-date, Harvard, Vancouver and IEEE. Switch between them at any time and the whole list updates.

Why should I check capital letters in titles?

Styles differ. APA wants sentence case for article titles, while others keep title case. Databases store titles as the publisher wrote them, so check them before you submit.

Where is my reference list stored?

Only in your browser on this device, never on our servers. Clearing your browser data removes it, so download a copy for important work.
