About this tool
Journals, universities and application forms set strict limits on abstracts, statements and essays. This counter updates as you type, and the word-limit bar turns red the moment you go over.
The Flesch reading-ease score and grade level estimate how hard English text is to read. Research papers usually score low; a statement of purpose or a summary for general readers should score higher. The most-used words list helps you spot repetition.
Questions
How are words counted?
Any run of letters or numbers counts as one word, including words with apostrophes. Hyphenated words count as two. Counting works for Hindi and other languages too.
What is a good readability score?
60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read easily. Academic writing often scores below 30. Aim higher for anything written for the general public.
Is my text saved?
No. It's only counted in your browser, and it's gone when you close the page.
