APA citation generator

Create APA 7th edition references and in-text citations in seconds.

For example 10.1038/nature12373, 9780143127796, or the title of a paper.

Your references

References you add appear here. They're saved in this browser, so they'll still be here when you come back.

Your reference list is saved in this browser only. Lookups send just the DOI, ISBN or title to public academic databases.

How to use the APA citation generator

    1. Paste a DOI, ISBN or the title of the source and select Find.
    2. If it isn't found, choose Enter manually and fill in the details.
    3. Copy the reference for your list and the in-text citation for your paragraph.

    About this tool

APA style is used across psychology, education, nursing, management and the social sciences. A reference starts with the authors' surnames and initials, then the year in brackets, the title, and the source, ending with the DOI as a full link.

This generator follows the 7th edition rules: up to 20 authors are listed, an ampersand comes before the last author, and journal names and volume numbers are in italics. Each reference shows its in-text citation, such as (Sharma & Gupta, 2021).

    Questions

How do I cite three or more authors in the text?

Use the first author's surname and et al., for example (Sharma et al., 2021). The reference list still names every author, up to 20.

What if there is no date?

APA uses n.d., for example (World Health Organization, n.d.). Leave the year empty and the generator adds it.

Does APA 7 need the place of publication for books?

No. The 7th edition dropped the publisher's location, so only the publisher's name is shown.
