How to make a well-formatted question paper in Hindi or English

By Learning Media Publication · Updated 22 October 2026

A good question paper tests what was taught, is fair to every student, and is easy to read. Typing one in Word with tables, marks columns and Hindi text can take hours. Here is a simple process that gives better papers in less time.

1. Start with a blueprint

Before writing a single question, decide:

  • Total marks and time, for example 50 marks in 90 minutes.
  • Chapters and their weight, based on teaching time or the syllabus.
  • Question types: MCQs, very short, short and long answers, and how many marks each carries.
  • Difficulty mix: a common rule of thumb is roughly 30% easy, 50% average and 20% difficult.

A blueprint stops the paper from being accidentally heavy on one chapter.

2. Write clear questions

  • Use simple language and one task per question.
  • In MCQs, make all options similar in length and plausible. Avoid "all of the above" unless it is really needed.
  • Say exactly what you want: "Give two reasons" is clearer than "Explain".
  • For bilingual papers, keep the Hindi and English versions identical in meaning, and check the Hindi once more after typing.

3. Build the paper

  1. Open the Question Paper Maker.
  2. Add your school or institute name, class, subject, time and maximum marks.
  3. Add questions section by section. Choose Hindi, English or bilingual layout.
  4. Generate the paper and its answer key.

4. Make several sets to reduce copying

With Premium you can shuffle questions and options into sets A, B, C and D, each with its own answer key. Students sitting next to each other get different orders of the same questions, which keeps the test fair.

5. Review before printing

  • Add up the marks: do they match the maximum marks?
  • Solve the paper yourself, timing how long it takes. Students will usually need about twice as long.
  • Check that the answer key matches the final order of options.

For MCQ tests, print matching answer sheets with the OMR Sheet Generator and check them with your phone. See how to make and check OMR sheets.
